2008 October Programs

All programs are held at the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center, 3 High Street, Ellsworth unless otherwise noted. They are offered at no cost to people living with cancer, their families, friends, and to people who are interested in the work of the Center.

Friday, October 3 – 8:30 – 3:30 – Cancer: There is Hope Here in Washington County- Day-long Forum Sponsored by the Maine Cancer Foundation. The mission of the event is to increase awareness of resources available in Washington County. The event will provide an opportunity for survivors and families to meet and share stories. There will be discussions lead by medical experts, survivors, and caregivers. The event is open to all, free of charge, and lunch will be provided. Friday, October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 - 1:00 – 4:00 Knitting Group - The knitting group is expanding its focus and is now open for social visiting as well as other crafts. There are also games with puzzles available. The knitting group has been instrumental in providing hand made items for people with a cancer diagnosis. Hats, socks, shawls, and scarves continue to be very appreciated by the people who receive them. The group eagerly looks forward to having new members to assist with this very worthwhile project. Enjoy a cup of tea at the Center or bring your lunch during this time.


Monday, October 6, 20, 27 – 9:30 – 10:30 Yoga Class - Mary Cline, Instructor – This will be a gentle but invigorating yoga class including yoga postures, breathing, relaxation and guided imagery. This Iyengar style class is for beginners and experienced students. Join us for stretching, relaxation and fun.


Monday, October 6, 20, 27 - 2:00 – 4:00 Reiki Healing Session - Reiki is the most simple, safe, energy-balancing technique one can learn and actually practice on oneself! Reiki is going mainstream, currently offered in many New England hospitals before and post surgery and post chemotherapy.


Tuesday, October 7 & 14 – 1:00 – 2:30 - Improvisational Healing: Laughter Workshop with ImprovAcadia – Larrance Fingerhut and Jen Shepard, owners of ImprovAcadia in Bar Harbor, Maine, will direct an improvisational comedy workshop designed to reduce stress, increase hopefulness, and one's overall sense of well-being. Rather than simply entertain, participants will be taught to hook into that which they find funny and use it to make themselves, and others, laugh aloud.


Thursday, October 9 - 5:00 -6:30 - Man to Man Program - The goal of this program of the American Cancer Society is to provide accurate information about diagnosis and treatment options for prostate cancer to the man living with prostate cancer and also to provide him support, encouragement, and information to common problems associated with prostate cancer.


Friday, October 10 - 1:00 – 2:30 Cancer Support and Resource Meeting (Held at Lubec Regional Medical Center) - If you have had a cancer diagnosis or are currently providing help and emotional support for someone with a cancer diagnosis - you are invited to come to this meeting to get support and learn about cancer resources available in the community. Michael Reisman of the Beth C. Wright Center and Barbara Barnett from Down East Hospice volunteer services of Washington County will lead this meeting. Light refreshments will be provided.

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, October 15, 16, 17 – 11:00 – 3:00 American Cancer Society Volunteer Patient Navigator training – What is a Volunteer Patient Navigator? The American Cancer Society Volunteer Patient Navigator (VPN) provides individualized, one-on-one assistance and support to newly diagnosed cancer patients, their families, and caregivers. The training will be held at the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center. Where to sign up or to find out more information? Thursday, October 16 – 1:30 – 2:30 – CancerCare Connect Conference Call- Progress in the Treatment of Lung Cancer: Report from the 2008 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASC0) Annual Meeting- CancerCare's free Telephone Education Workshops are a way for people to learn about cancer-related issues from the convenience of their home or office. Monday, October 20 – 11:00 – 12:00 Cancer Related Fatigue Workshop - Rick Robinson, owner of Bayview Physical Therapy will be leading a discussion on cancer related fatigue. Bayview PT has started a program to help patients deal with this under-diagnosed and under-treated problem. The talk will touch on current studies and treatment options. It will help patients and families identify the problem and will educate clients on how to seek care for this problem.

Tuesday, October 21, 28 November 4, 11,18 – 4:00 – 5:30 Belly Dance Workshop – Kelly Bruce, M.A. leads this introduction to belly dance, a beautiful and challenging dance form that can create flexibility and strengthen your muscles and body. Discover how this dance form can provide an opportunity for personal growth. Kelly Bruce is a dance therapist and has been belly dancing for seven years.


Monday, October 27 – 1:00-3:00 - Look Good…Feel Better Class- Look Good…Feel Better is an American Cancer Society program that helps improve the self-image and self-esteem of women experiencing appearance-related side effects from cancer treatment. Women attending this class will learn about makeup techniques, skincare, nail care, and options related to hair loss such as wigs, turbans, and scarves. Each participant also receives a free kit of cosmetics for use during and after the workshop.


Friday, October 31– 12:00 - 1:00 – Encoreplus - Encoreplus is a national YWCA program, designed to assist women diagnosed with breast cancer. It offers a safe environment of support and understanding for women with questions and concerns that accompany a diagnosis of breast cancer. Genie Jones will facilitate this group.


Friday, October 31 - 2:00 Ovarian Cancer Discussion Group - If you have had an Ovarian Cancer diagnosis, you are invited to come to this meeting to share experiences and learn about ovarian cancer resources available in the community. There will also be discussions about ways to raise ovarian cancer awareness and to increase resources on the local level.


Patient Navigator Program - This program of the American Cancer Society matches trained volunteers with people diagnosed with cancer to help them to "navigate" the health care system and other aspects of the cancer experience. The trained navigator will help identify resources and be a supportive listener for the person he or she is helping on a one on one basis. Volunteer navigators are available now.


Prosthetics Service of the Sebasticook Valley Hospital- Beth Bacon, a certified prosthetic fitter, is available by appointment to meet with women at the Center. She provides her patients with personalized service and information that allows them to stay in control. She will have the exact prosthesis designed to restore image, balance, and symmetry.

The Maine Buddy Program- This program of the Cancer Community Center of South Portland is for people living with cancer, those who care for someone with cancer, and those who have lost someone to cancer. Participants are matched one-to-one with trained volunteer Buddies who have had similar experiences. The Buddies through phone conversations help individuals talk through their concerns, discuss available resources, and provide support and reassurance. Reach to Recovery – This program of the American Cancer Society helps breast cancer patients cope with their breast cancer experience. This experience begins when someone is faced with the possibility of a breast cancer diagnosis and continues throughout the entire period that breast cancer remains a personal concern. Trained volunteers are available to give you support and up-to-date- information, including literature for spouses, children, and friends. Please call the Center to request a visit or phone call from a local volunteer.

Road to Recovery – This program of the American Cancer Society has trained volunteers available to provide free transportation for cancer patients to and from chemotherapy or radiation treatments. Call the Beth C. Wright Center to arrange a ride.
